The Last Exorcism
The Last Exorcism is a mockumentary horror film, directed and edited by Daniel Stamm, the film is about an evangelist who has after two years of performing exorcisms decided to participate in a documentary, and he then meets a farmer who had a daughter possessed by evil spirits. In contrast, to Paranormal Activity the Last Exorcism begins with a periods of equilibrium which is captured by the use of slow paced non-diegetic sound, this is also illustrated by key iconography of a house and a swing which could suggest child play and happiness, which is further supported by the evangelical minister who is praying connoting purity and righteousness. As the trailer progresses the music gets louder and faster which could suggest that the moment of disequilibrium is near, hence generating suspense. The moment of disequilibrium occurs when what looks like an innocent young farmer throws an object at the car prompting a change of period.

This trailer follows conventions of horror depicted in the location, as the trailer is set in a desolate farm house suggesting that the evangelist is isolated from the young possessed girl who is constantly screaming. The use of tone cards makes the audiences’ heart beat faster as it encourages them not only to focus on the visual aspect but to also digest the words which as a result would complement the fear factor of the trailer. At this moment the editors have intentionally speed up the music and used continuity editing to paint the picture of the plot and hence form cohesion. This trailer represents the fear of society as it creates a depiction of the rivalry between heaven and hell which is depicted through the main characters costume, dialogue etc.
